Neuropathic Disorders

Neuropathy is a disease characterised by damage to the peripheral or central nervous system resulting in pain, sensory loss, and weakness. The source of this pain may vary and can be difficult to locate. The type of pain may vary from stabbing, burning, electric shock, numbness, to tingling sensations.

Neuropathic pain is often a result of diabetes, stroke, shingles, trigeminal neuralgia, or sciatica.

Neuropathic pain can be frustratingly difficult for you to describe as the sensation can vary so much. This kind of pain can be continuous or can just spontaneously arrive from time to time; precisely what triggers the pain may not be apparent.

The goal of Acuhealth is to work with you to help your body’s ability to restore normal physiological pathways with optimal bodily responses.

Is this service right for you?

Acuhealth combines the protocols of acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, heat, massage, herbs and rehabilitation exercises to help deliver a successful treatment of your condition.

The types of pain you may experience with neuropathic pain include:

Hypersensitivity to touch which generally would not cause pain, e.g. your bedding or even a breeze can result in pain

An elevated response to a stimulus which causes pain – imagine a small tap feeling like a hammer blow. Often seen in clients coming off opioids, or those suffering from conditions like fibromyalgia, headaches and sciatica

Feeling of less sensation than you should from pain or touch

Numbness or sensory loss, clients describe this as numbness like an anaesthetic often sensation loss in the toes and feet

You are likely to have historically been prescribed a combination of medications including tricyclic antidepressants and anti-epileptic medicines.  Use of these pharmaceuticals can have substantial side effects, plus withdrawing from them can intensify symptoms.

At Acuhealth we view it as vitally important for our clients to understand their specific pain condition. To that end, we spend time in explaining the physical, emotional and neural factors impacting on your symptoms. Our techniques include giving you tools to manage pain better and to retrain the nervous system to provide long-term relief.

How is it treated?

Acuhealth’s protocols improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, regulate immunity, respiration, body temperature, pressure, hormonal secretion and sensitivity, neuromuscular coordination, and the manufacture of blood cells.

Acupuncture also stimulates the central nervous system, activating mechanisms of repair and regeneration. Acupuncture provides a tune-up to the organs and tissues of the body and enhances a dynamic equilibrium.

  • Paul is a compassionate, intuitive and skillful practitioner. He truly listens to my needs and concerns and is truly interested in my wellbeing. I came to him in extreme lower back pain, which left me barely able to walk. I’ve never had any acupuncture treatment before, so was naturally cautious to begin with. Paul took me through a clear plan of treatment, put me at ease immediately and explained really clearly what was happening. I wholeheartedly recommend him for his professionalism, wisdom, compassion, incredible skills and gentleness.
